How to Prepare for Moving Day in Maryland

Moving day doesn't have to be chaos. With the right preparation, you can walk out of your old home and into your new one without the stress most people associate with moving. Here's what actually works.

The Week Before

This is your window to handle everything that takes time. Don't leave it to the last two days.

  • Confirm your booking. Call your moving company (or us at (240) 353-2854) to confirm your time slot, number of movers, and any special requirements.
  • Finish packing non-essentials. Books, décor, off-season clothes — anything you won't need in the next seven days should already be boxed.
  • Label everything clearly. Write the destination room on every box, not just the contents. "Kitchen — fragile glassware" is more useful to movers than just "glasses."
  • Clear a path. Movers need a clear route from your rooms to the truck. Move cars out of the driveway the night before.
  • Notify your utility providers. Schedule your electricity, water, gas, and internet transfers for moving day or the day before.

The Night Before

Keep this simple. Pack one bag per person with everything you'll need for the next 24–48 hours: toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes, important documents, and any medications. This bag does not go on the truck — it stays with you.

Defrost your refrigerator if you're taking it with you. Wipe it down and leave the door open overnight so it's dry and ready to move.

Moving Day Morning

  • Be home when the movers arrive — or designate someone who knows the plan.
  • Walk through every room with the team lead before they start loading. Point out anything fragile or high-value.
  • Keep children and pets in a safe, separate space. Moving day involves a lot of heavy lifting and open doors.
  • Do a final walkthrough before the truck leaves: check closets, cabinets, the garage, the attic.

At the New Place

Direct traffic. Tell movers exactly which room each piece goes in — you can always rearrange furniture later, but it's easier to put things in the right place from the start. Check boxes off your inventory list as they come off the truck.

Maryland-Specific Notes

If you're moving within the DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia), plan around traffic. Rush hour on I-495 and I-270 can add hours to your move. Starting before 8am or after 7pm makes a real difference. Also, if you're moving into an apartment or condo, confirm elevator reservations and parking permits ahead of time — many buildings require 48–72 hours notice.
